Thick porcelain has become a mainstream choice for outdoor paving because it combines the appearance of natural stone, marble or concrete with very low porosity and consistent quality. Egypt, with a fast-growing building-materials export sector and short sea routes to the Mediterranean, the United Kingdom and West Africa, is a competitive origin for this product.

What Sets This Range Apart

Built for outdoors

20 mm thickness for paving use, glazed through a dense porcelain body with water absorption below 0.50%.

Anti-slip by specification

Any slip class from R9 to R13 on request, with punch-effect or stone-effect texture. Reference samples are rated R11/R12.

Solid through the body

No filler or material between layers; a black core is added within the porcelain clay for durability.

Twelve designs

Terrazzo, concrete, marble, slate, travertine, quartzite and encaustic patterns in greys, ivories, browns and blues.

Large format and clean lines

600 × 900 mm and 600 × 600 mm for fewer joints and a modern finish; 600 × 1200 mm for interiors.

Volume capacity

Production cycle for 100 containers in 90 days, about 10 containers a week, with annual supply plans available.

Export figure: Daily News Egypt (2025 building-materials exports of about $14.9 billion, up 36% on 2024). Product specifications from manufacturer data. See the sources at the end of this page.

Typical range supplied: R9 to R13 (reference samples R11/R12)

Any slip class from R9 to R13 can be produced. R11 or R12 suits most outdoor paving; R13 is recommended only for wet or oily environments, because its rougher texture is less comfortable underfoot and can retain dirt.

Texture options: punch effect and stone effect; other textures are available on request. Customised sizes and colours are available on request.

Strengths, Applications and Uses

Why specifiers and homeowners choose 20 mm porcelain

Strengths

  • Very low porosity: water absorption below 0.50% keeps moisture, dirt and mould from entering the body, and supports frost resistance in cold climates.
  • Stain and weather resistant: a glazed surface that cleans with a brush or jet wash and does not need sealing.
  • Strong at 20 mm: thick enough to be laid on pedestals, gravel or mortar beds, and to carry normal garden and terrace loads.
  • Colour stability: glazed designs keep their colour and pattern; the print is consistent from tile to tile.
  • Non-slip choice: R9 to R13 surfaces to match the exposure, from dry terraces to wet pool decks.
  • Natural looks, uniform quality: stone, marble and concrete effects without the variation and maintenance of natural stone.

Applications and Uses

Application
Why it works

Restaurant, café and hotel terraces
Consistent appearance, easy cleaning, stain resistance under heavy use
Balconies, rooftops and courtyards
Thin profile options and pedestal installation for drainage and levels
Walkways, plazas and commercial exteriors
Durable surface that resists weathering and frequent cleaning
Driveways and light vehicle areas
Only with a suitable sub-base and bedding; confirm loading with the installer
Indoor-outdoor continuity
The 12 mm 600 × 1200 mm size for interiors continues the same design language inside

Installation Methods

20 mm porcelain is commonly laid on adjustable pedestals, on a gravel or sand bed, or on a bonded mortar bed with the manufacturer’s adhesive and primer. Follow the installer’s guidance for substrate, falls, joint width and drainage.

Layout Visualisation

Illustrative running-bond layouts using the actual tile designs

Illustrations assemble photographs of the tile surface in a half-bond pattern; joint widths and tone are indicative. Other patterns such as stack bond are possible.

Quality, Compliance and Market Access

What importers and specifiers will ask for

Topic
Position
Product class
Porcelain, water absorption below 0.5%, corresponding to Group BIa in ISO 13006 / EN 14411 (dry-pressed, low water absorption).
Slip resistance
R ratings follow the German DIN scale. UK specifiers often ask for a pendulum test value (PTV). One UK reference guide treats R12 to R13 as preferred outdoors and R11 as borderline; confirm the required value for the project and test accordingly.
United Kingdom
The UK–Egypt Association Agreement is in effect. Egyptian-origin goods can qualify for preferential tariff treatment with proof of origin; ATHER’s understanding is that porcelain tiles enter duty-free. Confirm the rate on the UK Integrated Online Tariff before ordering.
European Union
EU–Egypt Association Agreement; preferential access with an EUR.1 movement certificate. EN 14411 is the reference product standard for ceramic tiles; test reports against it are normally requested by buyers and specifiers.
Africa
Importers typically require conformity or pre-shipment inspection per country (for example a certificate of conformity programme); requirements are confirmed per destination.
Documents
Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, test reports and inspection certificate on request.
